Replacing dash lights with LED's?
« on: 11 December 2004, 15:19 »
Just been searchinf for this but could not find anything, i know somehere has done this to there dash lights, but for the life of me I can't remember!

Anyways, I want to replace the dash lights with white LED's, question is, do led's come in different wattages? or are they all the same, and which ones do i need and how powerfull?

Do the led's come with cable attached to them?

Also how do you fit them? do they just pop into the existing light holder and then solder the wire to the existing connectors?

Cheers for any help

Did this on the weekend :) I only did it on a spare clock i had but looks really good, i just removed the green filter!

The standard bulb works better for the mfa LCD as with the LED you get a bright center point! Not sure if you can change the colour as it showed up green, can't see a fliter for it so perhphs there is nothing you can do!

The LCD clock/MFA also has a green filter in it.

You have to dismantle the clocks so you can get the LCD section out and turn it over so the clock adjuster buttons are face up. theres two little screws around the white plastic bezel that you need to undo.

Undo these and the clock bezel comes off with the lcd panel and behind this you will see the Green filter.

You can either not have a filter or if you dont want the "light spot" you get from fitting LED's then just replace it with a section from a white frosted college folder as this will help to throw the light and not concentrate it.

Hope that helps

Cheers ridgers, What a coincidence! I did my clocks today, so I took a look at the lcd screen on my spare clocks and i could not figure how to get the pcb out! Looks like you have to unscrew the face of the clock, so i left this as i don't have the correct screw driver for it and would probably end up scratching it! thanks anyway!

New lights are great, i just put a normal bulb in for the mfa and all is well! :)

Just a little note on the lights! I just took out the green filter on the top and did not replace it with a white opaque one. Th lights are very bright on the top half of the dials but the lower half is not very bright as there are no lights down there!

Any ideas on how to fix this?

surely put another filter in? i think thats the point of it anyway, use a bit of frosted plastic from a folder or something....i think someone else mentioned this as well. seems to do the job.

Yeah I know I should have tested before I put it all back together! :)

Geez, the thought of taking the dash off for like th 7th time just kills me :) But I should be able to get the plastic bit off without taking theclocks out, so that should be a blessing! :)

Cheers
