Very Sick MkII 16v

Help! have just aquired my 1st GTI, an 89 mkII 16v. Got it very cheap as an MOT failure, (Rear brakes, tyres, strut tops etc). it ran fine at first, but taking it to work to do the mot bits it started running bad. It seems ok when you start it and pull away, but as soon as you give it some welly it starts kangarooing really badly, back off the throttle and it improves, until it reaches normal operating temp when it jerks badly under any throttle load, and eventually cuts out and wont restart. if you leave it for a couple of hours, it starts on the button, and the problem repeats itself as it warms up, until it cuts out again! It seems to me to be an ignition problem, but I am not too familiar with the 16v setup. any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Great site by the way, some nice cars! will put up some snaps of mine, it actually looks quite nice from the outside!!

i would change all the sparkies leads dizzy cap etc etc and check the timing is right. also do a complete fluid change whilst your at it give it some chance! then check all your vacuum hoses are connected (small white tubes or black rubber tubes) check all your injectors are tight and check the metering flap in the airbox isnt sticking or bust etc. its the massive metal disc under all that jumble of pipes on the left of the bay

be a good idea as well that the fuel pump is working properly and the relay is ok. find out which relay is the fuel pump (anyone remeber?) it should get hot as you use the car if not bin it get another one. also the fuel pump should 'prime' the system when you first start the car(a whining noise) which should stop after a few seconds

dunno what else but its somewhere to start

Check the lift pum in the tank as well, if this goes the main pump has to work harder and will give you fueling problems!
