My Mk5 experience
« on: 10 December 2004, 18:24 »
Just got my own car back after the VW-crashing-of-car-debacle ( see: http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=15130.20 )

While my car was in the body shop, I had a Mk5 1.6 FSI (just 3000 miles on the clock) for a few days.? ?It was poo.?

The interior was VERY plasticky, although it did have a snazzy radio with a big blue display, and the seats were OK.?

Driving position was a bit high up.? Felt like I was driving an MPV or something, especially since there was sooooo much headroom.? The car that I normally park next to at work (Pug 306) is a few inches higher than my (slightly lowered) Mk4, but the beast of a Mk5 was certainly a few inches HIGHER than that car!

Cornered like a boat.? They've improved the handling on the mk5?....? My @rse.

I looked up the stats for it on Parkers.co.uk - said it was 115 bhp (same as 2.0 Mk4 GTI, and 10 bhp less than my motor).? However, it felt sloooooow as fook.? You put your foot down and nowt happens until about 4000 revs, and even then it starts screaming at you.? Also had a weird bottom-pivotting accelerator - like the old beamers and porsches, (... and arcade games? )

All in all, I thought it was ugly inside and out, and entirely characterless.? I hope the new GTI is better, because this heap of poo gives the golf a bad name.? :embarassed:

Rich?

All new VW's are having that style accelerator pedal, seems weird at first but trust me you appreciate it on long journeys
