Engine Oil Change
« on: 23 May 2010, 13:23 »
I have just done 1100 miles and am thinking of an oil change at 2000 miles as I drive in stop start traffic every day. Would you consider this a good idea?
I am intending to use Motul Specific 5W30 504 00-507 00 which costs £50.10 for 5 litres and is specifically for VAG cars.
I wonder which make of oil VW use?

PS: The other engine oil which is highly recommended is Silkolene.

Well many years ago they used to do a first service on new cars at around 500 miles, this was just an oil and filter change to remove any metal that got flushed down after the engine was built. Todays cleaning methods are more refined. I believe that VW may run the engine on a test bed to make sure everything is ok, the oil maybe replaced then or they have a different oiling system.

Sorry but I disagree with these longlife oils. Oil gets contaminated with carbon as part of the combustion process. This carbon is filtered by the filter but it still gets pumped around the engine. Now the VW service interval is 10k or 12 months which ever comes first. I think there is a longer life service of 20k which to me is ridicules.

You can change you oil at 2000 miles if you want too and providing you use an oil that covers the VW spec (read the handbook) you should be ok.

I'm quite lucky in that there is a garage next door to me. The owner drives a Golf R and is an enthusiast. He will change my engine oil and filter at 5,000mls. VW will service at 10,000. So plan to change the oil and filter every 5,000mls

Hello long time  Was stuck in London last week due to the ash in the air. Got the tube into Earls Court for a cheap hotel for the night and went out for a beer. Got caught up with some lads out for a night. Heavy session but a good night. You could have been there

Yes, a good idea, I'd decided to have extra oil changes as I also do a lot of stop start town driving. Will get it done at dealer at about 2K miles, then at service next March. Yes, you can do it yourself easily enough, but then you have to dispose of the old oil and filter, which is a pain in the neck for me as my nearest disposal site is several miles away. Will probably continue with this and have 2 oil changes every 12 months.

i have 7800 miles now and @ 10,000 miles i will be sending it to Blackstone Laboratories for analysis. So far cars tested @ 5,000 are coming back that the oil is fine and can last for another 5k. I drive my car HARD so it will be an interesting find.
