two mk2s that wont start.. :(
« on: 22 May 2010, 00:26 »
HI all, me and my dad both have mk2s that won't start! My 90 spec valver felt like it was firing on 3, so took the plugs out and cleaned them all up and put them back properly.. now the car just turns and won't catch at all! Checked for spark and it's definitely there.. pump primes and I can smell petrol when turning it over. Any ideas?

Secondly, my dad's.. he just bought it, new clutch belts and full service. He broke the starter taking it off so put on an untested starter we had lying around. When trying to start, there's on clicks and it doesn't turn at all. Checked its getting 12v where it should! Ideas? Is it knackered?

Thanks!

I'm guessing that on your 16v, if that's all you've done, you may have put the plugs leads back in the wrong order (unlikely with a 16v)........or, sometimes if you have a bit of an oil leak into the plug wells it can smeg up the leads as well as the plugs?
Dad's......8v or 16v? sounds like the starter could be knackered but given the work just done he may have forgotten to connect back the earth strap to the gearbox so not enough current is getting to the starter....this is a common error, unfortunately if it is an 8v the tendancy is for the earthing to go through the ecu and fry it!! The injectors then stay open and fill the cylinders completely with fuel so the starter can't turn the engine over. Check the earth strap is connected, if it is connected then try the following, if it was not connected do not!! Jump the starter straight off the battery +ve to the smaller spade terminal, you should get a click at least like you were getting before, it might turn over. If no luck, jump to the larger terminal with the nut, the motor should spin fast but not engage the flywheel. If it does not spin then it is duff, if it spins then the solenoid part of the unit is probably duff. If the earth was not connected then come back.

Thanks for the advice! My Dad's (8v) had the earth strap connected properly as I knew this was a deadly error for the ECU! Tried everything you've said and the starter is doing absolutely nothing at all. Looks like a new one it is then..

With my 16v, I took out all the injectors one by one and tested for spray. None of them were spraying at all! I took off the main fuel line from the fuel pump that goes into the metering head and testing that and that was fuelling nicely!

I then took the airbox top off and checked the air sensor flap thing and pushed that incase it needed freeing..

Put everything back together and it works again! Albeit running rubbish and sounding like it's running on 3, it idles perfectly.

Well my Dad's now runs with a new starter! Picked it up for £10 from a mate and it's massive!

Mine now runs great! I left it to run in for a while and it fires on all 4 nicely.

So we know have two running mk2s.. Hooray!
