Is the GTI fitted with a jet engine?????

 OK, so a bit over the top but used the A/C for the first time since owning the car today and when I pulled onto the drive the fan was spinning like mad - sounded like a jet engine - even the neighbour commented.

 Is it normal for the main fan to come on with the A/C ?

My Fan's not loud, but i can hear gases behind my dash when on tick over... and when i turn it off to, it still makes a gas sound??

Ive leather! was hot today though, but no air con for me! oh no! sunroof open, windows down, erh foot down and away we go!

quite a common fault with our cars, mine started sounding like a jet engine about 6 months after I bought it, normally occurred when sat in traffic after a spirited drive or had the air con on,

took it to the stealers and turned out the small fan was not working so the large fan was coming on all the time to compensate, they replaced both fans under warranty and has been alot quieter since

Common on the Mk5 2.0Tdi Too. Usually sorted through warranty

 Thanks Gtijames for the useful info ...

 Just checked it after a run and no sign of the small fan running, large ones making hell of a noise though. I'm calling in the dealers next week to get it checked, sounds like the fault you mention to me

 Just called in the dealer & it is the "common fault" - small fan isn't working, should be sorted this week.

 I thought this only affected earlier models but mine is a 58 plate
