mk1 engine mounts
« on: 19 May 2010, 22:14 »
hey guys. dont really spend much time in the mk1 section. as im a mk3 man but....
my friend has a 1.3carb which he blew up.  hes bought himself a 16v from  a mk 2 golf.  all the engine mounts are nothing like and look purpose made for a subframe, like my mk3.   doesa anybody know where to get the correct mounts, or is it the case of wrong engine/box?

thanks in advance

You will need the section of chassis welded in for the 1.6 / 1.8 engine then run mk1 1.6 or 1.8 mounts.

Running carbs will be easier.

yeah you need to chop the driver side mount bracket off the chassis leg, flip it upside down then weld it back on in a different spot.  then 1.5-1.8 MK1/cabby/scirocco mounts. you also need to change the steering rack and gear linkages from a 1.5-1.8 5 speed manual mk1/cabby

imo it might be easier to get a gti shell and start from there!? but then it would already have an 1800 in it so could just convert to 16v maybe..  :undecided:

rubjohnny, quote me if i'm wrong but i believe the racks and linkages are different on smaller engines. Linkages defo are. The mk2 16v engine wont accommodate  what youve already got.

the linkage definitly needs changing, was just unsure as to the rack, i didnt notice a problem.  might aslwell get him to buy this rack (mk1 1.8 )  we go get the mounts and linkage on sunday.  saves any messing about, always easier when its not your money
