.? If I'd wanted something faster etc I would of got a 306 GTi6.? Before anybody kicks off, I've had one of them too and they are mega and leave lots of other GTis for dead on straights and bends.

thats because you drive a mk3.........................

I needed a car that I could feel comfortable in, the 306 was a bit tight for me as driver.  Thats the reason.

I'm on (or should that be in?) my 4th Mk3 8v at the minute and its a great everyday car, nice one.? Read the sig, the constant banging on about 16v this and that get a bit tedious after a while.

Well done and well said...mines the same as yrs but tornado red.

i can honestly say i absolutely love my mk3 gti 8v 2.0 everything about the car just says "go on get in have a drive" and it (she) shines like nobodies business i'd recomend the car to anyone
i've had 4 mk2's 3 normal everyday bod cars and a oak green 16valver (which flew by the way) and i kept seeing mk3 gti's and fell in love so i got one it took me a while to find a good one but i got one
mine is a phaze 2 mk3 8v gti with long beach alloys in a strange dark blue that changes colour to purple at certain times of the day and it's mint with only 92 k on the clock with the fullest of vw service history
i couldnt have found a better car, i put it in for its mot just before christmas and it sailed with compliments from the garage owner who wanted to by it to which i turned him down even though he offered me more than i bought it for
so it goes to show there are good ones out there you just have to look

Its a Golf after all, I bought mine because I like Golfs.? If I'd wanted something faster etc I would of got a 306 GTi6.? Before anybody kicks off, I've had one of them too and they are mega and leave lots of other GTis for dead on straights and bends.

I'll probably get slated for saying this but I'm thinking about selling the Golf for a 306 GTI6, why did you sell it, just because  you wanted another Golf? What do you reckon about them?

It doesn't feel as big inside as the Golf, but the one I bought had a few problems according to the previous owner who contacted me after I bought it.? Thats it really.? I thought it was a very good looking car, VERY fast, VERY good round bends but the build quality isn't as good as the Golf.? It always felt a bit lightly built buit they are heavier than a Golf.? I would be tempted again, you can get the Rallye as well, a bit lighter with no Aircon / half leather or electric windows.? You save about 100Kg in weight and with 167 brake on tap you can definately notice it.? Oh yes, head gaskets can go on all the 306's at about 50K, mine was gone on my 306 XSi and that was a few hundred short of the 50K.

306's don't like going fast through very twisty S bends though apparently (according to Skip Brown Motors - THE guru on all things pug), the rear suspension can't react fast enough and a few have gone backwards into the scenery.? He sells an upgrade to take out the passive rear wheel steering as its this that upsets the car on these S bends.? Whether any of us are good enough to reach the point where this happens.? There is also the S16, its about 10 brake down on the GTi6/Rallye but a good one can be had for about 2 grand.? I would be tempted to have a GTi6 again.? Hope that lot helps.

I've just re-read what I wrote earlier on, all the words are there its just the order thats a bit off

On the whole, the Golf feels more solid, is nearly as quick, looks as good but the reliability and resale value are so much better.  I personally would be put off buying a 306 with approaching 100K miles on it, but wouldn't mind as much with a Golf.

How many OLD peugeots do you see on the roads, 205's included?  But how many VW's are still running about...

Cheers for the posts guys, I certainly won't be looking at one with any more than 70K on the clock, and preferably want the later of the phase 2 version, late S reg and on so looking at wrong side of ?4,000 for one.

Although I say all this but some bloke I work with is good friends with a guy who buys cars at auctions, cleans them up and passes them on for a small profit (at trade price to traders) and he's had a nice mk4 GTI lying about for a while, he was tempted himself for his wife, the lucky girl, only she turned it down for a focus C-Max ?!  This mk4 has 70k on the clock, S reg so first of the Mk4, and he reckons for around ?3000, he's looking into for me, but sounds alright. He's had it for quite a while so could get a good price on it because he wants to shift it.

Anything I should watch out for - Should really post this on the mk4 bit I know!?
