Air conditioning

I saw a Mk2 GTi for sale a while ago that had air con fitted. Yesterday I wanted to sell mine and buy any old car that had air con. Does anyone know if there's a kit you can buy, and how you go about filling air con to a Mk2 GTi?

Actually, I just bought MK2 Gti with air conditioning (could be the one you saw on the ad). It is imported from Australia. Also, I know the ones imported from Japan surely have aircon (otherwise people wouldn't buy as it is very humid there).

I remember someone in Japan fitted aircon by VW dealer. I am quite sure you can get some bits and pieces to fit aircon to your golf from VW dealer (maybe in Germany). However, you need to spend lots of money on that.

So maybe if you cannot find the one with aircon here, it would be easier to import from Japan or Australia. I have seen hundreds of golf2 gli and cli (which has got the same engine as gti) which cost you around 500-1000 pounds (if you spend 2 grands, you will get a perfect one). My friend told me he spent 600 pounds to import a car from japan to uk.

Air con was an option on the MK2 and the way to tell if its dealer fitted or not is the slider icons on the heat selector. On a factory aircon MK2 it has snowflake icons to the left hand side. On an dealer retro fitted aircon system the switch for the aircon is located in one of the switch blanks by the heated rear window. My MK2 GTI 16V has aircon from factory and its an english car. It was an option at the time but not many people took VW up on it as it was quite an expensive extra.
As for retro fitting it, it is possible but would probably be expensive and time consuming, assuming you can get all the bits from a donor car, If you do find a donor car dont forget to grab the glove box as well as this is smaller on the aircon cars.
