Snoops:

The standard 5 door R costs £31,310 (this includes 18" wheels, Bi-Xenons and headlamp washers).

The 5 door GTi with Bi-Xenons and 18" wheels comes to £26,440, which makes a difference of £4,870.

Now consider the better standard seating (IMO) in the R (+£800 my guess), the more poweful engine (+£1,000 my guess) and the 4WD (+£2,000 my guess), then the difference is £1,070.

I gave VW the benifit of doubt by £70 (!) and arrived at a figure of £1,000!

PS: The R would cost much more in fuel and the small boot is a bit of a disappointment. However, it's a great all weather machine. Worth the £1,000? Most definitely.

If this was in reply to my post. I would reply, Better seating i disagree the golf R cloth looks cheap and nasty. If the prices are also a reply to what i said I would like to point out that was said by me was what i paid and what i was going to have to pay then at that point in time for a similar spec R from stock.

I am with you on the 'real' buying costs, but not for the seats.

There are also a few more extras with the R in addition to the above   ,  the value of which depends on your subjective view.  But many of you GTi'ers have paid extra £100's for the LED rear lights.

- LED Rear lights (up until now anyway)
- Front LED DRL's
- Lower body side skirts in body colour
- Lowered R suspension
- Upgraded Brakes (over the GTi)

However I still agree the R is overpriced by a £1000 or two

Here's a close up of my front seat after 3000 miles.

I prefer the Recaro's for sure

but quite like the standard cloth seats and Alcantara bolsters

- LED Rear lights (up until now anyway) - Parity
- Front LED DRL's - Tick.
- Lower body side skirts in body colour - Don't like - tacky. Cross off.
- Lowered R suspension - Tick.
- Upgraded Brakes (over the GTi) - Big tick.
However I still agree the R is overpriced by a £1000 or two

Answers as above!
I love the seats and would prefer them to leather.
There you go. The R is therefore better value for money than the GTi by over £1,000 at least.
See how the tables have turned!
Hate mail welcome!

Anyway, I am very happy with my GTi and though would love to own an R, would be unable to accept the lousy fuel consumption in London driving and the dinky boot. So I made the right choice for myself. I am sure a re-mapped GTi would provide me with some of the thrills of the R.

Why is the R's boot so much smaller than the GTI?

The haldex 4 wheel drive system means the boot floor has to be raised
