I then let him past, and waited for him to floor it... a big fat puff of black smoke later and i found myself easing off a number of times before he moved over. Letting loose it was almost as if he was going backwards. I know from having the R32 that not many cars can live with the AWD off the line. With a remapped Golf R it would make many other cars look a little stupid!

Ahh.. reminds me of the gold old days with the "What cars have you beaten in you GTI?" topic. I used to love reading your accounts of "scalping" lesser mortals with your Mk 5 R32. :D

Maybe I'll start a "What cars have you beaten in your R?" topic over on R Forum.

i get the feeling i'm the slowest GTI driver on this entire forum, but i find the GTI plenty fast for what i use it for
there are a few of us

in fact today i went on an airport run to pick up my dear old gran. she can get in easily in the back being 5 doors (although you can get the R in 5 doors too can't you?), and the ride didn't seem so harsh as to rattle her bones into a million pieces. i guess she was on a plane a little while before though, anything was probably better than the bumpy plane ride  :undecided: but would my gran have been able to live with a journey in a Golf R? maybe... but i wouldn't have liked to try it given the choice. and could *I* live with the ride of a Golf R every day? i don't think so.
Im the same without ACC i could not live with the ride in the R. Even then im not sure i could. The GTI is higher than the limit i was wanting.

as for the bloke saying get a s3.  dont bother!  new one out next year.
And theres a new golf the year after.
Its always better to buy a car near its end of life as all the bugs and errors have been ironed out. Unlike the current mk6 golf
Mk6 GTI  &  Mk1 GTI

to be honest guys I look at it this way.

30 years ago there was the GTI...

then came the g60 and there was still the GTI...

then came the vr6 and there was still the GTI...

then came the r32 and there was still the GTI...

the r32 stuck around for a bit with the GTI. Then the r32 left and in came the R. But guess what....

There is still the GTI.

Great post!

Epic fail.

Remapped GTI takes quite alot of cars. I "Drive" mine down Junction 27 on Sundays. Lots of Subaru's half of them bags of sh!t, nothing better then beating a subaru driver, the face is a picture Lots of Type R's, Older shape M3's, Older Evo's / new evo's couple of R8's, porsches  everything more or less.
Last week upwards of 80cars there, The majority having a good old "drive" between the roundabouts.

So true. In 5 -10 years time the R will be a R4R or something similar.

The GTI will still be a GTI.
