Rear end shunt
« on: 06 December 2004, 13:57 »
Bit of advice required please. My sis has a mk 3 and tells me that over the weekend someone rear ended her car at a roundabout. i havent seen the car but she tells me that there is no visible damage. I told her to look in the boot and lift the carpet up to check for damage. Any other non obvious places to look as I thought that mk3s have the crumple zone/bump stop thing that collapses on impact but not sure at what speed.

I would be interested in knowing where to look as someone ran up the back of my mk3 at the weekend as well, again no visible damage, but am going to get it checked out by a garage.

May have a sore neck tho

Presumed it would have to be relatively hard to actually cause damage but just wanted to check to make sure....vaguely remember a post a long while ago (think it was '6 who posted actually!!), but cant remember the name of the bit that can sometimes need replacing.

Take the rear bumper off, it couldn't be easier, just 7 10mm bolts and two clips under the wheel arches.

Behind it you will either see some square black impact absorber things that should have absorbed some impact (!), these may be damaged if they've done they're job and if you want them to absord more impacts should be replaced i suppose.

If the car is a high range model or gti etc it might have a beam behind the bumber instead of the impact thingies, this beam is for impact absorption aswell and may be bent or buckled and could also be replaced if you thought it necessary.

Be carefull to remove the clips from the bits behind the wheel arches before refitting the bumper as it's impossible to refit it properly with them attached, they should be reclipped on when the bumper is in position.

Oh and just in case it's not obvious when you look at it, the top four bolts are hidden behind a black plastic cover just behind the bottom of the boot hatch.  This strip just pulls off and clips back on.
