Knocking/clunking when reversing.... Help!
« on: 08 May 2010, 22:27 »
Hi all,I am looking to buy my little dream golf mk1 e found one on the web which is described as in great condition and the only bad bit is
a knocking/clunking noise while reversing and doesn't affect the car at all.

Is this "bad bit" that bad?Or I'll be looking in a near future to have major problems with gear box/differential?

Many Thanks

Vince

well a recon gbox is 400, second hand anywhere from 50 upwards, could possibly  be a driveshaft/ cv  prob. my advice is walk away and look for something else what other issues are with the car, if bodywork/engine was good then maybe but if you have to travell any distance then forget it,
bide your time and the right one will come along

wayne gardner smokes one rothmans too many
500cc 2stroke bad for ya health

If its a single clunk/knocking It could of cause be as simple as the brake pads anti rattle springs been missing/broken or worn.
Mk6 GTI  &  Mk1 GTI
34 years of GTI ownership.

Great thanks...that car was beyond my expectations though!

I think I will keep on looking then....not since I am not good with mechanics...I'd rather spend bit more money for something which sounds mechanically.

Cheers

Best
