Cold weather tyres
« on: 08 May 2010, 14:24 »
Just acquired a bargain set of 17" monzas which I plan to use during the winter months only (have some 18" Monzas for when there is no salt on the roads!!). Anyway, the 17" alloys need new tyres and seeing as I will only use them from Nov - March was thinking it might be worth putting some winter/cold weather tyres on them. Anyone have any experience of this?

Vredestein do an all-weather tyre called the Quatrac 3 which camskill are doing for £99 a tyre.

Alterntively, I was thinking about trying the Ultrac Sessanta as they have them on offer at £84 each which seems great value but they are listed as a summer tyre. Does anyone have any experience of the sessantas during the winter/snow?

Failing that I might just bang some Michelin PS3's on them, as i'm very happy with them on my 18"s.

I've just gone through the winter on Ultrac Sessanta's.   I've ran the gti for 4 years now and they are far better in the cold/wet/icy season than the f1 assymetrics, f1 gsd3's, michelin PS2's and conti sportcontact 2's I've has previously.  In fact, this is the first winter the car hasn't scared the hell out of me in the snow, we've had more than the past few winters put together but with the Ultrac Sessanta's snow driving was much less scary than before

For the record, they're easily as good as the best of the above in any other conditions, a stunning tyre and my tyre of choice from now on

as you have gone to the expense of acquiring a second set of wheels purely for the winter I do not see any point in putting summer tyres on them.. you might as well not have bothered and just run the sessanta all year round on your 18s

get a winter specific tyre there are quite a few to choose from and just use them for when its icy/snow conditions, you should see a couple of winters out of them that way
