ABS Problem
« on: 04 December 2004, 19:43 »
My car failed its MOT due to the ABS light not going out so i had the system checked on a computer and it showed 3 faults (The 3 faults were 2 front sensors and 1 rear sensor).

I had the sensors replaced and when i collected my car the ABS light would go out when i started it but i noticed a intermiten grinding sound when i pressed the brake pedal (There is a klicking feel from the pedal when this happens also), any ideas what this could be?

Also it is about 30hr since it was fixed and the ABS light is back on again when driving!, do you rekon the grinding sound is the cause?

Check for play in the rear wheel bearings and the reluctor rings for corrosion.

how much did you pay for the sensor(s)? my nr side needs to be replaced and the garage have said 65 quid and then labour time to do the job. also said its more than likely welded in place so could be a timely job.

If its the rear sensor they are simple .

jack the car up , take the wheel off and you should see a black cable going to the rear of the metal disk that sits on the rear arm .

The sensor is just bolted on with an allen key [about 6mm from memory] it will probably be tight but comes straight back at 90 degrees to the wheel .

lift your back seat and there are two black grommets about the size of a 2 pence piece (one for each side ) unlclip the faulty cable from the socket and push the gromet through to the underside of the car , the whole thing then just unclips .

If you cant remove it from the rear then take the caliper off and remove the rear disk and tap through from this side .

It is definatly not a hard job at all . just remember to support the caliper . Definatly takes no longer than about 30 minutes .

While you are there you may as well change out the rear pads if they need doing . And is definatly not welded .

A word of warning the replacement from GSF is too large , i had to sand about 0.5 mm off mine .

sorry forgot to say nr side front..

plus i have to say i have little mechanical knowledge at this point but willing to give it a go.. . is the process you've outlined above much different from changing the ones on the front?

cheers for the info man!

Shame  , looking on ETKA , it appears that the cable is run in a plastic gutter down the front suspension struts . If you take the wheel off you should be able to see it .

It appears to be held in with an allen keyed bolt the same as the rears , however of a different size . I doubt it will be too much trouble to change out . just ensure you have the car jacked up properley as the brakes get hot so the chances are you may have to put some effort in to remove the bolt .

To trace the wiring in the engine bay its a black [as ever] twin cable with black and brown cables .

When its light ill have a quick look at mine .

Took my car back to the VW Specialist garage that fitted the 3 new sensors.

Turns out the right side rear is faulty also, so that also needs replacing.
The grinding sound was the ABS activating at low speeds when braking due to the faulty sensor.

actionslax - I paid ?235 inc VAT to have 2 front sensors (?35 + VAT each), 1 rear sensor (?60 + VAT), ABS Diagnostic on the computer (?15 + VAT) + fitting.

You should be able to get the front 1 done for say ?60 fitted inc VAT

The new rear sensor for the right is gona cost me ?80 fitted plus VAT.

i'm sure i got quoted 65 bucks alone just for the sensor..... but if he meant 65 bucks all in well you're pretty close with your quote  will phone around tomorrow and see if i can find any further variations on the price...

cheers
