All depends on what you want

performance , lower economy = GTI
less performance , more economy = GTD (just don't buy a manual GTD the gearboxes rattle and VW ain't interested).

price pretty much the same.

having spent a few months lurking this forum i've noticed it's a question that's always asked
personally i would go GTI (and I dare say most on this forum will say GTI, but bear in mind most members *love* their GTIs), but from your comment about 'economy' it sounds like GTD is a more shrewd option. having said that if you are properly going down the economy route there are cheaper cars than the GTD to consider.

there is nothing wrong with trying them both out cos you might find you'll like one over the other or the one you may not have liked has surprised you

There is no R32 anymore. It's an old model and has been replaced with the R which is 4WD.
You are going to miss the performance of the 335i with the GTi and definitely with the GTD. Both FWD.
Golf R is closer in performance and probably equivalent. Probably also has better real world economy than the 335i.
If you wish to have both economy and even better performance than a standard GTi, get a GTi a re-mapped.

You have kind of answered your own question already. 335 is the GTI the 330d is the GTD. In fact now that I come to think about it... what is wrong with a 330d. It's as fast as a standard GTI and more economical

Wellcome to the forum!! I've had both including the edition30, I have just bought the GTD and I'm loving the it, but the dsg is a must for the Car , transforms it compleatly. The gtd is a very nice car and drives brilliantly but if if your looking more zip then it's the gti but then you have to pay for that in more road tax & petrol!!  You can have the best of both worlds gtd plus remap? Goog luck Steve

Actually the 320D is the GTD don't you think? Similar in performance, though the BMW is much more economocal and with a better engine.
I think he could stick with BMW 3 series saloons as you suggest as IMO they have the best engines but which are unfortunately housed in pig ugly bodies.
Maybe that's why he wants to change.
