I have a similar problem with my iPod Classic 80GB and my RCD510. Usually happens if I haven't driven the car for a couple of days. I have a suspicion that the iPod battery drains whilst it's connected to the RCD510, even with the ignition turned off. When the iPod battery is flat, the RCD510 won't recognise it until it has some degree of charge.

Yes that was happening to me with the cold nights. Now the temperature is a lot higher it doesn't seem to be discharging the ipod as quick and it plays fine every morning.
