ARGHHHH help
« on: 01 December 2004, 14:57 »

Hi everyone.. i own a V-Reg 2litre gti. problem is it keeps holding back the power for a few secs then it picks up again, it hesitates most of the time, then when i'l put my foot down again theres a power boost and the cars power is back, its also drinking alot of oil, i have no oil leaks and the emissions tests come out fine (no smoke at all out the back) i did think it was the maf, but not sure about the oil, no fault codes come up either.

Someone more mechanically minded than me maybe have some idea if the burning oil is related to the lack of power. What I can offer though, you're right in that it could be MAF related, could also be crap in the injectors or throttle body.. but you can buy stuff to clean that. I suggest you run a few tanks of optimax through it (assuming you use normal petrol usually)
You had the usual service sh1te done lately ? plugs & leads etc..

no before, i was silly n put an induction kit on it, which made the car run ike crap, thats when the trouble started, i put the old standard air filter back on it long ago, it improved slightly but i still have al the above problems, i have to put oil in it every month n half as its all gone!

The fact that you used to have an induction kit, and that you are losing power, suggests that it may be the MAF sensor.  As Chris said, clean that baby with some Carb cleaner.

As for using up oil, not sure, matey. :undecided:

deffo a maf prob to me, either that or a temp sender fault (not for guage for ecu), but sounds more like the 1st to me, cleaning dosnt always work, an dif you have used a wet oiled induction kit it is proven that the oil gets on the maf and fooks em, some peeps have succesfully cleaned em and they have worked ok, you want to use a fast drying solvent cleaner rather than contact cleaner as that has lubrication propities in it. if there some one round your way with a golf the same swap for 10 mins and see if improves??

they used to cost around ?225 from vw but they now do em on and exchange basis for around ?85.

as for you oil usage prob i think it is common on the 2ltr engine when the mileage is low (gti89 has one also and i remember his uses a stupid amount of oil, and its only done 18,000 miles or so), sounds like the same prob if he's on ask him if hes ever found out what was makin his use so much???

Gaz
