Does anyone know if there is supposed to be some kind of guard to stop spray from the road getting at my V belt??
I've got a 1990 gti and it squeals like a pig when I change down gears in the wet. My belt isn't slack and I even tried it over tightened a few times but it still seems to squeal.
 
Does this happen to anyone else?

Yes it does and How fu@king annoying is it  VERY.

I think i might have seen something about the fact that the pulley wheels are possibly glazed and that the surface might need roughing up?

Any ideas anyone?

sounds right to me. pull the belts off and scuff up the pullys with some light sand paper. be a good idea to replace the belts too.

Nice one I'll give it a try.
I found out that you can get two different width belts too. I'm gonna go for the fat one.
