Bizarre - new car, dead keyfob
« on: 26 April 2010, 21:00 »
So car is about 2 weeks old.

Tonight the keyfob I have been using is dead  :undecided:

I wonder if it was pressed up against something in my work bag all day and the battery got killed. Spare one works OK for now, off to do a search for battery replacement instructions before I hack it open wildly.

Take it back to the dealer and tell them your fob is completely drained!
And you will get a free battery to boot!

Magic wiggle coaxed some life into it but still going to replace the battery just in case. Don't fancy having to pry off the door handle cover if the fob goes dead out on the road

That door handle cover is an absolute nightmare to try to open, I was so scared of breaking mine that I gave up and just hope I never need to get into the car that way.

I thought the key fits into it and you just flick to open it as opposed to levering.
Never done it though.

What a stupid place to have a key slot! Imagine trying to do it at night!

i didn't realise that there was the emergency key hole to unlock the car until looking through the manual more carefully - it's very well hidden and makes the car looks a lot sleeker without a metallic keyhole to spoil the lines
perhaps if you are doing it at night it might be useful to carry a torch on your keyring or something.

remember the days when the key used to have an integrated light? my dad's old BMW used to have this - obviously in those days remote locking was not a feature that had been invented yet and having the little torch helps find the keyhole. i kind of miss having the torch.

i heard of a van that features a key that charges the little battery whilst it's in the ignition slot whilst you drive - can't remember which one, it was featured on a Top Gear segment. considering all the little luxury features the GTI comes with, i'm a tiny bit surprised this wasn't included with the GTI.

Probably a bit extreme as most keys I have had for cars with remote central locking would outlive the car
If it had a torch then fair enough.
