notifying DVLA
« on: 26 April 2010, 14:16 »
i need to inform the DVLA that my MK2 has had a 16v engine put into it. the car on reg and log book is an 8v GTI.

i have checked the DVLA web site and they say to provide written evidence by way of either:

a receipt for the replacement engine

written evidence from the manufacturer

an inspection report provided for insurance purposes

written confirmation on headed paper from a garage if the change in engine size took place before you bought the vehicle

can i write out a receipt as if i have brought it off someone breaking a 16v?? the engine was already in the car when i brought it, i have just finished wiring it up.

Take it to your mechanic and get him to write a letter saying what you did as if he did it for you?

Your V5c has a section for changes to the vehicle

You're notifying them of an engine number change, that's all.

Got the reg of the car the engine came out of?  Provided they know a bit about the donor they won't be that interested.
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.

im in the same situation, changed an 8v gti for a G60 which is still a 1.8 8v so tax is still the same, roughly the same year so emissions the same ect.

i dont have the Reg of the Rado it came out of and im not sure where on the engine the number is, its put me off informing the dvla incase it gets seized, taken of the road ect.

it is however insured as a g60 engine'd car with all mods declared, so im kind of halfway to legal ( just waiting for someone to tell me my insurance would be void if my v5 is wrong?)

Number 1 make sure insurance is notified, and maybe get a new MOT so you know you have one with your new engine tested.
After that it's not the biggest issue with the DVLA. Put it this way when a dealership changes an engine under warranty, I bet 9 times out of 10 the owner or dealer doesn't think to inform the dvla.
If the Road Tax pricing wouldn't change then again don't loose any sleep over it.
If you think there should be a tax increase then up to you, but might be worth informing them to save any hassle when you sell the car and the new owner gets spooked by the differnet numbers.

Cheers

If you don't have any evidence, I would recommend that you complete the V5C document with the engine number change and attach a very well-written, polite letter explaining the situation.

This isn't rocket science and as Skid says - it happens a lot.

If anyone wants to do it and forward the letter to me I'm happy to check it before you ship it.

i did this with my mk2 vr6 and received a letter 4 weeks later explaing that i must do this:

a receipt for the replacement engine

written evidence from the manufacturer

an inspection report provided for insurance purposes

written confirmation on headed paper from a garage if the change in engine size took place before you bought the vehicle

so youve already answered your own question

just get a friendly local garage to type you up a quick letter :afro:

I don't think a semi will give the same results
