Custom DIY Upholstry! Easy? hard?
« on: 26 April 2010, 00:04 »
Hey,

Ok so just went to have a look at my golf in the dark and thought damn i need to do some work on the inside!

Outside is easy to fix up and really simple, but inside is a different matter, no amount of cleaning will make me happy with it and i really want it to be something special... something that no one else has!

So im thinking about going full bore on this car and making something im really going to be happy with and do nearly everything myself (will probably fail a lot but it will be worth it)!

Anyhow moving on ive gotta re-do the door panels anyway and sort them out (was just going to re-do them in the same/similar material and then make them look exactly standard but then i got thinking... did some research and door panels, roof's, side pillars, sun visors etc etc are all really easy to do (sun visors being the most difficult out of them because of the seams).

But then when it come's to re-doing the seat's materials im kinda buggered as there is seam after seam and it all has to be a very nice tight fit, even with them being generally kinda flat seats and not like bucket or racing seats with all the curves and even more seams.

So i was wondering if any of you have had a go or thought of having a go at doing the interior yourself?

Dash board is kinda simple repair's, spray detail and maybe even some fiberglass if i want more shape to it!

If not then i had a quick look at fitting corrado seats in the car as some of those are nice (in a mk2 gti) but then tool's wise im kinda lacking as i use to just take it down my friends house who worked at a garage and me and him used all his or the garages tool's for the old muck about project car.

Thanks

Lewi

I found some leather interior seats (slight wear) for around £400 but think that's kinda expensive just to save me a day's work making them myself or might even start off by just buying those universal leather covers and just fitting them more permanently to the seats!

All the door cards are off and need to source a precision jigsaw or rent one to cut out direct copy's of the wooden behinds asap.

Depends how much you paid in sewing class

I've done a few odds and ends in the past.

What material are you hoping to use? If it's leather then you'll need specific equipment which isn't really cost effective if your're doing it as a one off. Vinyl is easier but less durable.

Huge amount of work DO NOT UNDER ESTIMATE THE TIME IT WILL TAKE!

If you think on you will retrim an interior on your first attempt in a day then you are dreaming.

There's a reason that retrims are expensive, time + skills.

Not impossible but just making the point that don't go into under any misapprehensions.

Could always drop off your chairs at a trimmer and do door cards and pillars etc yourself.

You don't own a Mk2, you support it.

Dropping of the chair's at a trimmer sound's like a plan! Time to get researching!

For now i have just cleaned everything up and it will do while i sort out the outside but it really does annoy me having seat covers on :(
