New MK2 GTI Owner...
« on: 25 April 2010, 20:30 »
Hey everyone,

Picked up my golf (mk2 gti 1989) about 20 day's ago and it's been sitting in the garage having some MOT problems sorted out but now it's out and it's time for some golf(ing) action!

Anyhow picked it up in france which is where i live like 90% of the time and headed off to the UK and got my driving license (4th time lucky)... So i think a very nice first car choice compared to my best mates Standard Saxo and MG ZR 1.8 which it will beat both, but of course taking it easy on the roads as wanna keep this motor for many years.

So far the car is a bit of a sh** ride but exterior colour is nice, been well serviced over the years (except last 2 where some fat guy decided to run it into the ground and bend all the doors by leaning on them so they have both dropped slightly). Plus the body work has minimal rust except the exhaust which i need to change due to it currently being too corroded and actually illegal due to it's noise levels!

Anyhow here's a pic of it for you!

Only pic i have at the moment but it's got some nice alloy's, nice big exhaust but gotta get the damn thing changed so looking for suggestions as i love the roar and got a nice big induction kit too and has been lowered with those silly tiny mirrors too which you can hardly see out of but fit the care nicely!

Colour wise i haven't been able to find another golf gti the same colour but it's not a re-spray unless they took literally the whole car apart and sprayed every panel inside and out which i doubt!

Been working on it today and fixed all the central locking apart from the boot.

Also gave it a good clean inside and found a load of smashed glass under the carpet which means some type of security system is going to have to be fitted asap.

Gotta sort out the electric windows as have no idea why they don't work and really don't know what i would even start looking at so probably take that to the VW garage and get them to have a look and get a quote for it (then if i can do it myself will probably do that to keep the price down and i enjoy it).

Getting some boiled linseed oil tomorrow and going to go over all the trims (exterior) but not sure what i could use on the interior as that is also faded like mad but wasn't too sure about the whole sticky aspect when im planning on using this everyday from now on... kiwi shoe dye/polish for the interior?

Also got to sort out a radio as the last one seemed to have been nicked so gotta check all the wiring is there but never wired up a radio before (only speakers) so might again ask the crafty question at a garage or the french alternative of halfords and get the wires from them and then picking up a 7 inch flip out monitor online (of course after ive got some security sorted)!

Oh and it's got a few rust bubbles and patches on the bottom of the door sills so will get the worst of it off, protect it with whatever these damn french shops have to offer and then if necessary body filler and a spray of paint to tidy it all up.

Lot's of thing's to do and lot's of time which is good!

Will probably be full of questions to ask all of you 'old golf timers' with the experience that i so desperately need but trying to keep the golf looking a kinda standard but nicely done and a few mods here and there but nothing too out of the ordinary.

16V! Which i think makes it a 139 bhp golf which is sweet but still need a faster one so going for an engine conversion nearer the end of the year once this one reaches it's death (got alot of miles on the clock already).

Yep insurance is dirt cheap... my car is more expensive than a Peugeot 307cc, Vauxhall Vectra 1.8 and ive only had my driving license for about a week now. For about 700 to £800 a year i get 3rd party (fully comp is like an extra £100 a year but not really much need considering the cars age), also get free breakdown cover with that and full EU driving insurance under my own name.

If i was to put it under my parents name then it would go down by about 1/2 as a minimum!

Only annoying thing is with everything i do to the car ive gotta check if it's legal in both the UK and France before i do anything drastic so kinda sucks seeing as im going to be going between the two, but can't get points on my license over here... just a big on the spot fine which is still better.

Would definatly not be able to get my dream first car in the UK.
