Just had a phone call from the mechanic and long story short I need a new engine ...

My mechanic has'nt totally stripped the engine down yet but from what he has done there was quite a list of things wrong, first up the seals on the turbo have perished and the turbo was burning the oil causing the heavy smoking out of the exhaust. The oil pump has gone and when he drained the oil there was alot of metal filings in it and in the bottom of the sump so something is obviously wearing away. I knew the clutch didnt like 3rd gear occasionally but he said that is on the way out also oh and it also needs a new water pump. The car has done 113k miles, I dont see much point in re-building the engine so basically im going to have to try and find a new engine/gearbox/turbo and fit that in the ol' girl or break her and look for another Bora or maybe a mk4 Golf and before anyone jumps in and says anything about the mechanic leading me on etc I trust him 100% as he has done the work on all my cars and my familes for as long as I can remember!

so break or fix? ...... opinions?

you will be lucky to find a low mileage replacement lump - i know - i am looking  :lipsrsealed:

so you could be in the same boat ( no pun intended ) position again unless you are will to pay out for a warrantied recon engine

Fix it, seems a shame to break it.

Thats pretty damn low miles to go that bad!.... didnt you drive it with warning lights on?.... (sorry don't mean to rub it in)... real shame... be good if you could get another lump in it, its too nice a car to break IMO.

id price up the new engine & ancillaries (when sourced) beofre making a decision is a shame to break but it all depends on how much a recond or just a replacement will cost! bad news mate sorry to hear this!

I reckon get it sorted mate and keep it, you'll be so much more proud of it than u were already if u do, it would be such a shame to get rid of it, bit by bit too.

Tbh, I can't talk from experience, as I've only been driving my first car since the beginning of June, a 1.3 MK2 Golf with GTi bits, it's got nearly the whole bodykit, lights wheels etc just needs big bumpers, and all I've done to it is put a GTi grille on it and smoked side repeaters apart from the other stuff my brother did before he sold it to me. He had major problems with it which cost a fortune to sort and get it through an MOT - but he didn't scrap it and I know he's so glad he didn't, so I've always said whatever it needs doing to it, I'll get it done, even if I have to buy a f*cked £150 Fiesta and drive it for a few months while I do it.

I know you have to consider all the options mate, but really if you like the car that much and you're that proud of it, there is only one option...........
