Some advice on G220
« on: 20 April 2010, 22:53 »
Got my G220 today, just got a few queries as there are no instructions in the case
1. What speed do I start on the G220 to polish out some minor swirls on the bonnet and roof?
2. Am I right to start off with 3 then move to 5 til all the polish start to disappear.
3. I got Meg 80 and 83. I also got some SRP. Which one should I use?
4. The pads I bought got different colors and was supposed to do a different job. They feel very similar. Do you need a different pad for different polish?

Thanks Waxamomo saving me a few pennies and prompt delivery!

Many thanks guys for any advice!

great article.

I see the article references a paint depth gauge to work out what treatment to do.  If you don't have one, or don't want to correct the paintwork much - Is there a "safe" set of pads & polishes?

You only ever need two tools in life. If it moves and it shouldn't use Duct Tape. If it does not move and it should, use WD40.

Well my advice would be to go in with the softest polish compound and the softest pad possible, do 1 pass and see the difference. VW paint as iv been told and found out myself is really rock solid on older golfs especially, you really gotta go at it but play it safe to begin with.

I did about 4 passes with the soft pad and a very lightweight Menzana polish and it got rid of a few swirls but really didn't cut much at all. Then I did 1 pass with the harder pad and harder polish compound and after that 1 pass it had gotten rid of 70% of the swirls.

Hey,

Good advice - thanks.  Ordered soft pads etc, and will give it a go.

It's not the paint thats hard its the clear coat on VW's. Just incase anyone picks up this slightly wrong, its not the paint your polishing either, its the clear coat. Always the clear coat. The swirls, scratches etc are all 'normally' on the clear coat its this that is getting the polishing, the paint should never be touched unless of course your doing a repair etc.
