ok i have a mk2 1.8 auto gl - haha auto
Anyways this is my problem that im getting and if i could get some pointers as to what it may be at least i wont seem too much like a naive plonker at the garage.
Im driving along and the car begins to loose revs, maybe a min later the revs drop completly and i have to pull over because i've lost all power in terms of moving.
I'll try and start it - it trys to start but cant, so i leave it for bout 5 mins and make sure everything is turned off and i can suddenly start it again.
This has only happened so far when i have my stereo on and maybe some other stuff like lights ect, that may just be pure coincidence tho.

This is probably one of those problems that could be a number of issues but at least it may paint a better picture for me.

does it fire when you try and turn it over or does it click or nothing at all?

Sounds like carb icing to me, check the warm air feed is connected to the exhaust manifold plate, and that both vacuum lines are plugged into the side of the airbox, and the rear connection is plugged into the back of the carb.

Also, take the small pipe off the front of the airbox and make sure the flap inside opens when the engine is running!

Hi guys, another mate said what about if its not grounded properly ?

Its definatly nothing to do with electrics - like stereo because everything was off and it did it again.

And tonight I've had to leave it near a friends house because it wouldnt start up... [definatly fires, starter motor is working but its like no fuel in it or something].

grounding could be the problem yes.

Today i was on a hill in traffic. the car conked out!! didnt start! i looked under the bonnet and noticed a black wire that had come loose. this stopped the power supply to the fuel pump.

Its located onto the block at the top right if thats any use to you? maybe not as mines a totaly dffrent spec.

I'll check straight away, when i get there because i know that my sub looses power a lot and it sometimes comes back on when i jerk the car a bit...

You were right, the metal corrigated tube was broken at the carb end, also my fuel filter was very dirty, and the alternator belt is knackered.

How the hell do I put the new alternator belt on ?

Just loosen the alternator, remove old belt and refit the new one, then tighten   Keep the old one in the boot in case of an emergency

Well thats what I thought but there's another belt infront of it running lower down and horizontal, doesnt look like i can just pull it off...
