Monza reps
« on: 17 April 2010, 20:47 »
Evening all
Would like to know how many of you guys are running monza 2 reps and how you find them?
Are they really that much inferior than the genuine ones?
How have they stood the test of time ie laquer coming off? How easy do they mark?
And do you regret buying reps over genuine ones
Also does quality differ between different manufacturers of the monza rep?
All comments welcome

A few of the chaps over in the MK4 section have had Monza reps put on their MK4, migt be worth asking this in there aswell.

Not used them so cant comment.

Just recently fitted some Monza II Shadow reps to my Black 5 door Mk5. Brought these new off eBay for around £300 inc bolts etc. Really pleased with them. Appear to be simular in weight to the originals and almost the same size i.e offset and width. Finish is excellent too. The only issue I had was with the centre caps which were a bit mickey mouse..an Audi one with a VW gel sticker over it!. I managed to source a decent set of vw caps again via eBay which fit perfectly...all in all a happy bunny. My 17"s will be refurbed and new tyres fitted for next winter. For the money well worth it.

I was looking at those. They look very good and are 7.5" width (like the real ones) and all the other copies I've seen are 8" wide (so probably heavier and will affect the handling).

When I get round to replacing mine, these will be probably be what I go for.

Very interested in this - as I am thinking of buying a set of 18" Monzas to replace my (fairly badly kerbed) 17" OEM wheels. Idea behind the upgrade in size being that I am seriously tempted by a brake upgrade (and actually consider it essential if I go for any power mods as well), but personally I love the Monza look so would rather stick with them on the larger size if economically viable.

Have been doing the same searching as everyone else, one option that hasn't been mentioned yet, though, is possibly importing. As a quick example, found these in US
http://www.finishlinewheels.com/specials/15,VW+CARS/596,VW+GTI+MKV+Sport+281+Rims+18x7%C55/

Seem like a good price for what looks to be a good copy from the pics (in as much as you can tell - would ask them to send through a much higher res photo before actually buying of course) but has anyone actually done this before? Are them some pitfalls that I am overlooking through ignorance? e.g. Taxes/Duties/different fitting on US wheels/A N other? All advice welcome, but especially if a few people are interested (a small bulk order might help offset/minimise shipping costs) then this might be one route to go?

Cheers
Iain.

Personally i would'nt bother going to all the trouble and expense of shipping over to the UK. These look no different than the ones sold in this country but i guess its worth a look. As i mentioned in my earlier post, i paid just over £300 for a set of 4 so if you can buy cheaper then its a bonus.
