Bonnet release.
« on: 16 April 2010, 14:36 »
The bonnet release lever in the footwell isn't releasing the bonnet catch.
Any suggestions as to what my options are to get it working again?

The handle is working fine but the bonnet catch just dosn't seem to want to release when i pull on the handle,i dont think the cable is broken either.
There dosn't seem to be any way of getting to the bonnet release catch from the outside, bit of a sticky one so to speak.

Its a June 2006 car and i  bought it from a VW Dealer in February this year so it came with 12 months warranty.
Would this problem be covered by the warranty?

Its a right faf of a job!!!

You need to remove the engine undertray and put your hand up the back of the grille to the bonnet catch and do it that way.

But the good news is i cant see any reason it wouldn't be covered by a vw extended warranty

It'll be covered by VW, take it back to them and get them to fix it.

You pay a premium buying from a dealer + the 12 month warrenty so make the most it whilst it lasts.

Local VW dealer (not the one i bought it from) is looking £49 just to look at it.
If what caused the problem is covered by warranty then that charge will be waivered but they need to investigate first.
They say it may not be covered under the warrenty as it involves a cable that may require adjustment.
Having had a closer look myself it looks as if the cable end has become detatched from the catch itself.
Does the VW badge in the grille just pull out? as it looks as if you might get access to it from there.

I take you just pull on the VW badge to remove it?
There is a bit of give in it,just dont want to go breaking anything at the back of it.
Do the 3 screws secure the catch?

Noooo, don't just pull it you will break it. Its either a quarter twist left or right with a bit of force and then pull it towards you. There might be a clip or something, I cant really remember to be honest lol.

Try a quick Google search.

Yes you are right,a turn to the left is required to remove it.
Can't see the 3 screws that are mentioned, can only see a plastic type cover & 2 torx headed type screws which seem to hold it in place.
Where exactly are the screws you mention?
