The cheapest way to get a plate is always to buy direct from DVLA http://www.dvla-som.co.uk 

You can see their older plates being auctioned on there too (ie suffixed and pre 60s plates etc)

Always check out the DVLA before buying anywhere else - in most cases cheeky companies are advertising the plate before they themselves have it

I bought and sold V5 DUB a few years back and the comedy of it was that it sold to someone wanting it nothing to do with cars but because his name was V Singh Dubsomething

And the price you see on DVLA includes vat and transfer fee....whereas others dont like new reg, elite transfers etc.

Depends what sort of plate it is really some are age related some aren't.
Six digit plates of the format DUB 123 were age related issue in the uk upto the early 60's.
Then you've got the plates with a letter suffix/prefix from the 60's up until the early 2000's followed by the 01/51 plates since.
As far as I'm aware special plates e.g. DUB 1 etc aren't age related at all (I'm guessing on that one though so could be wrong).

yup, absolutely correct. apart from the last bit. DUB 1 is age related and will be from the 1920-30s.

A1 (or 1A - cant remember) was awarded to the minister of transport of the day by himself as the very first number plate.

There?s a guy who lives near me with a Volvo S80 ? the big saloon.  He?s about 50, partial to tank tops and slacks.  Looks like a retired accountant.  His number private plate is YOB followed by three numbers.  It pi55es me up whenever I see him ? I presume they must be his initials but it looks f*cking stupid on an S80 driven by an old church goer!

So does that mean that actually ALL registrations are age related but in the case of plates like DUB 1 etc you are unlikely to be transferring them onto an even older vehicle so effectively you don't have to worry about the age issue with them???
