loss of power
« on: 14 April 2010, 17:54 »
took my car to manchester on sat, after about 150 miles i had a major loss of power, went into the services and my turbo wasnt working. was stopped for 20mins and all fine wen car turned back on and got there fine. it then happend again on the way home  after around 150 miles jus as i accelerated to about 90 n the power just went. so did same thing waited in services for 20 then carried on.
have now scanned my car and got the fault code 17965 which is this Charge Pressure Control: Positive Deviation.
anyidea what i can do or if there is anything i can do without taking it to a garage to be ripped off.
my car work perfectly fine driving around town and to work and things and the turbo seems fine, i just dont want it to happen again on a long journey.
thanks andy

Sounds like sticky turbo vanes or boost leak.

Take the car out and once it's warmed up, take it to over 3.5k rpm in 3rd gear and see if it happens again, if not change to 4th and take it to 3k rpm.

There's loads of threads about how to sort this.

I found the only way to get my car to go into limp mode was to cruise at 60-70 in 6th then slightly press the throttle, everytime it would go into limp mode.
used a turbo cleaner on it last September and had no problems since

Mines goes into limp mode over 3.5k rpm in 3rd and over 3k rpm in 4th

Although I found if I take it slowly to those rpm's instead of booting it, it won't go into limp mode...
I do that and give it a good thrashing to about 4k rpm in 3rd and 4th to help clear the vanes and it does go a lot better since I've been doing that, but I'll eventually get the turbo cleaned properly by rtech.

mine was the other way around, if I put my foot down it wouldnt go into limp, but slow and steady it would
been over 6 months since it last went into limp mode so the turbo cleaner is worth every penny

can buy it direct from Innotec - most garages won't have heard of it let alone stock it

Ideally you need a set of ramps as you need to disconnect the downpipe from the turbo and get access to the actuator

i had long prob with limp mode had your fault code aswell seem process of elimination. i never cleaned the turbo(but plan too) and a allard delete on erg sorted my
17965 - boost presure control valve(n75) open cirucit but other codes the reslt was a worn injector loom which i got sorted by vw 130 quid all in. now no limp mode no codes well to do with that anyway ha ha

dont want to add any confusion so if the turbo cleaner works then all good if not maybe egr.

VW8v I really feel for you mate, you have had more than your fair share of probs since owning your TDi, you could write a book on common problems and fixes, or become a mechanic at thsi rate.
