1.8T Issue

I drove my AUM on a dual carriageway earlier and was doing 70-80 and my temp gauge went from 90 to 120 quite quickly, I then slowed down as I was coming off at a junction and the temp went down to 90, I turned the heater on (thinking to get some of the heat out of the engine)

I then came back onto a dual carriageway and as soon as I went over about 55 it rose again, I drove for ages at about 50 and it was at 90.....

The pipes are hot so i'm guessing the stat is ok, could this be the waterpump? the car is on 88k on a 2000 AUM did that come with the plastic props? was there a time when they changed from plastic to metal?

Advice appreciated very much...

Pull off the top hose going into the coolant bottle, run the engine if no water flows - water pump.

VW have never used metal impeller

I think GSF do the metal type which are much better than the OEM water pumps.  They are around £28.

 VW have now revised the plastic they are made with so are reliable now - just replace EVERY cambelt change IMO

Arrrghh nips, but I feared the worst... you know what the most annoying thing is, that on my return driving @ 55mph ish a red mk5 tdi lowered with a nice girl in the passenger seat came up behind me and wanted to play but I couldn't! (sorry my slightly immature, testosterone overload nature coming out there!)

I think i'll get the works done, tensioners etc.... cheers guys!

A failed water pump cost a member here  over £500 in recovery cost..   A membership card is worth is weight in gold.

Christ! not good.... poor "member".  RAC/AA is well worth it as you say.... I appreciate your advice/comments, once the motor is well again I will be enlisting your remap services....
