ED30 - the saga continues!!
« on: 13 April 2010, 18:37 »
Some of you may remember last year my ED30 was written off on Friday 13th March?!
If you didn't then here is the thread:
http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=112326.0http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=112326.0

Anyway... I thought it was all dead and burried.  I'm starting to look forward to my new Golf R, which is due any day now.
My mum emailed me today telling me I had a parking fine.
Odd I thought - I don't own a car!   My fiancee seemed to think I had parked her car somewhere.  I told her SHE would get that fine!  She then thought it was maybe my VW courtesy car.  No... that would come to OUR house.

I called my mum, and got her to open the fine letter.  Apparently a VW Grey Golf ED30 had been parked in a McDonalds car park in Skegness for 3 hours and 8 minutes last month.  As I am still the registered keeper at my mums address, thats where the fine went.

I called up the parking fine people and told them the car was written off over a year ago.  He told me he had video footage of it - but understood my predicament.  I then called Skyways of Birmingham - who I sold the car to as scrap.  The guy was very helpful and took details and told me someone would call back (which they didnt!).
I then called the DVLA.  They have the WORST phone system in the world!!!  It kept telling me it was busy and just cutting off... no hold music or anything.  Just 'try again later'!  Eventually I got it to ring, and got the choice of about 30000 options - none of which referred to what I wanted.  I pressed button after button - then it told me 'you can't do this over the phone' and cut off.
I called back - but they were busy
Eventually after going through this 4 times I managed to guess my way through the options so that I got a human on the phone!

I told her what had happened and she said to send a fax to them explaining what had happened with the car reg, my details etc - and they will send me out a form to get my name taken off the car.

Either someone has ressurected my ED30 with its £18500 of damage and rebuilt it on the cheap, or someone has put the VIN plate and Reg on a stolen car.  When I went to www.askmid.com and typed in the reg, it told me that the car had no insurance!

I spent about 90 minutes at work today trying to get this sorted when I should have been doing more important stuff!
What a pain in the a$$

I did think about this... but what can they do?  Other than not sending off the VC5 form and parking over the time limit - the owner(?) may not be doing anything wrong.
I would have thought it would have been up to the scrap company to send off the VC5 - as I had to send it to them when I sold the car.  I'll try them again tomorrow and see if I can get an update.

Perhaps its someone on here thats the new owner?!

i would report it to the police.
They can tag it with ANPR and if it shows up again, can at least question the driver. Sounds odd  :undecided:.

Did you not send the yellow section of the V5C back to the DVLA?

I just sent the completed V5C to the scrap dealer as requested.
I assumed they would do whatever was necessary.

That is where you have gone wrong then. Yes, you should send off the V5C document to the scrapyard, but you should have detached the yellow section and posted to the DVLA separately. It is the owners responsibility to send off the section saying you are no longer the owner and who is. If you don't you could be liable.

The fact that the car was written off will go in your favour, but it is still a legal requirement.

HTH
