... Out of curiosity, anyone know how someone would stand legally if they wanted to reject the car after recovering it? Especially since it was still in its running in period when taken!  

I would think the law makes no differentiation between a 'older car' and a car 'in running in period' - the car is the car and as long as it physically exists and can be identified i expect it'll just be given back to the rightful owner in whatever state it is in. in fact the owner may need to go and collect it himself/herself from the vehicle pound, or pay for it to be towed, or insurance may pay for it. it would then presumably up to the insurance company to cover the costs of any checks to ensure it works the same as before and to cover the costs of any new parts or repairs.
however i'm no expert in these matters, i'm just trying to think logically.

When I said legally I suppose I meant where they stood with the insurance company.
I know if my brand new car only a day or so old with 100 miles on the clock had been stolen and turned up a week later with several hundred miles on it and probably ragged to death in the crucial run-in period, I'd be very reluctant to have it back.
The insurance company may well make damaged parts good again but they can do nothing about "peoples theories" in running in cars.

Over to the insurance company. I'm not having the car back until they have fully checked it out. Out of interest what mileage is normally suggested for the run in period, not that it matters now! Cant imagine the thugs who nicked were drivin around like a Sunday driver!

Good to hear its been found..  Can you change your registration #?  It might become  a PITA later if the car was used for burglaries and the plate is tied to them..

About your question:...(in the Netherlands) insurance policy state that when the car is not retrieved in say 30 days you get the amount of money to buy a new one...normally this is the best option...

In your case it is obviuosly debatable due to ordertime  ....if the car is found within the period of time, but damaged,  you are only entitled to argue only about the way they solve the problems and if it is solved correctly.....

Mind you I heard from experience that if there is damage they solve it first class....including e.g. professional cleaning...
