Thursday  -  got a plate on Retention and was going to get it onto the car but it'll delay my getting the car (Retention Cert to the DVLA and waiting for Number Plate Authorisation Certificate etc)  -  happy with the ordinary plate.

Same here. I have a  Personalized Plate which I have retained for the past 15 years (!), but I have decided to enjoy having a '10' Reg car for the next 6 months.

If you already have the plate on retention you can get it on your new car while you wait.
Just take it to local DVLA office and they will print you a tax disc there and then and send you a new V5 document. 

Its the getting it on retention or transferring from one car to another that takes its times.
