Hi guys looking to get new tyres now for 17 inch wheels.

Car came with Bridgestone Potenzas which I don't really like. Find them a bit prone to spinning and not holding the road as well as I am used to.

Then swapped the fronts for Dunlops Sport Maxx (I think... it's sport something) which I do quite like.

A couple of my mates have been telling me to try Avons.

I want my tyre to give good grip (obv) although I don't want tyres that only do 100 miles. Has anyone tried Avon who could comment?

Michellin will only put new tyres on the rear as they are adamant that is where all the grip comes from.
Interesting you noticed a difference putting the Dunlop Sport on the front. Was it a considerable difference you noticed?

I had Avon ZZ3 tyres on my Mk5 (225/40-18), found them to be pretty good. Grip was fine in wet and dry, wear was good, 15k on the front. They also had a decent edge protection lip. I could get the Avons for under £100 and at that price they were excellent value.

I would consider them again when I need to replace my current tyres.

I have Dunlop sport maxx on the Mk6, only done 250 miles to date, but initial impressions are that they are slightly better than the Avons.

Yeah the Dunlops came at a good price - got them for £86 a tyre.

I would describe the Potenza's as very slippy. They felt like a hard compound. For example coming into a roundabout the front of the car was very happy to understeer -even at lowish speeds - and when exiting the car would happily wheelspin - even before my map.

The Dunlops however offer more grip and feel for me in the same situation when I turn into roundabouts. Also with my map they seem to offer less wheelspin than the potenzas did before my map.

I tried them cause they were cheaper and I had Dunlops on my Mini which handled like a dream. I would say the Dunlops are worth considering if you need new tyres.

Sorry to pick your brains some more but which tire do you reckon would give you better grip in a straight line. Were the Avons you had the top of the Avon range. I have the Dunlop Sport Maxx on my car and I am pleased (well until I swapped my rear potenzas to the front). Just wondering if it would be worth trying the Avons or getting Dunlops again.

I would say the Avon ZZ3 were a mid range tyre.

Based on only 250 miles, I would say the Dunlops have the edge on cornering, but that may be because the Mk6 is better than the Mk5.

Having swapped from the Bridgestone tyres on 16" wheels to Avon on 18" the performance was significantly better with the Avon tyres.

If pushed would probably rate the Dunlp and Avon tyres the same, but both better than Bridgestone.

For Summer yeah, they aint recommended for Winter.

I had a set of Yokohama Parada Spec 2's on my Civic, they're awesome tyres in the dry, not so good in the wet admittedly- but they're very predictible none-the-less...

The downside is that they're grippy because they're soft, so they don't tend to last so long.. but they're worth a punt if you're on the lookout

I dont think any of the tyres mentioned are for winter. I would still go with the F1's though... great in wet and dry, when it really counts!
