I have stripped the top end down as i was doing the cam belt anyway,  i thought i would see if i could find the cause of this grumbling/rattling noise!

I need some opinions on what to do!  I would like to get it back together today as i cant see anything thats really taken any heavy wear to it other than what is to be expected for a 165k engine!  Now... My money was on the cam chain but after listing to it for a while yesturday it sounds more of a clattery noise from the exhaust side on number 3 cylinder (rear right area)  but not as far right as the cam chain, that doesnt mean much i know!

The lifters have worn a fair bit on the striking surface but again,  nothing unusual, but that would cause it to grumble more than it would tap as the lifters them selfs are pumping up well!

As for the chain,  measured by how much it sags, for a small chain it does sag a fair bit and the links slide from side to side a little but would that really cause it to make this noise?   Im on a tight budget,  should i go for new lifters only,  new chain only,  both or nothing?  Not that i can really justify spending anything on this engine now!

Take a look at a photos if you have seen your lifters etc...  did they look like this and were they noisy or quiet?

Cheers!

got a question!...  I know how to do the cam timing, thats no problem, but im trying to line up the two cam shafts with the chain,  there are two dots, one in each chain sprocket!  do i line them up to face each other?   cheers

They need to be pointing towards each other and both level with the top of the head.

Cool, i lined it up then i thought... Nah i will get a new chain, for the price of a chain its madness not to change it while its appart.

Does anyone know where to get the chain apparently both GSF and Euro car parts do the chain but i cant find it anywhere!  Should i bother with the lifters? mine does not Tick/tap.

Hi, I have been looking for a chain today, didnt have much time to hunt one down but apparently the KR chain is the same as the ABF?  Can any one confirm this?  i also found euro car parts list the same part number for both?

cheers.
