OK, for the last three days she has been fine, batterywas 12.1V (a bit low should be 12.6V I have been told) so I charged her more and it seems to be fine now the battery that is.

Now here's what's happening - from cold I turn the ignition over and the starter is wuring away as it should but she will not start untill i hit the accelerator and she fires up fine!

When is she has warmed up fully I can stop and start her no problems without touching the accelerator ( fires up after 1 second)!!!

What could cause this?

1) want to rule out my starter motor first so, if the starter is wuring away does this mean it is fine? or could it still be making the right noises but failing to do it's job?

2) could the timing effect this start up?

3) could it be the warm up regulator?

4) anything else that could cause this

Thanks for any suggestions

i assume when you mean "whurring away" that the engine is turning over but not firing?

check the cold start valve

also, check the ISV is buzzing when the iginition is switched on

wont be the warmup regulator

Clicky

do you see the wee blue thing below the blue plug leads & dizzy, and to the right of the dipstick tube?

thats the cold start valve

it just squirts a bit of petrol into the cylinders before startup if the car isnt at a certain temp. bit like a 5th injector.

take it out and get someone to turn the ignition on and see does it squirt petrol out of it!

Got, it, it has a blue connector on it yes?

Which bit do i undo? it has an allen key bolts on it about 3" in from the blue connector, is this the bit to undo?

aye, thats it. try disconnecting the electrical connector one morning before you start it.

when they become knackered they have a steady leak and drip, so overnight your car is gradually flooding itself.

I cleaned up the connector and it seems to have fixed my problem! at least so far.

How does the cold start valve come off? would not mind checking it anyways's!

Next job is new injectors :) the merc ones i have been told are the best and cheapest for brass ones!

its all just screwed in, so just undo the fuel line on the end of the cold start then undo the cold start

as for the injectors, yes merc brass items are better as they dont corrode. but make sure you get the injector rings/seals from VAG

I assume I should reconnect the fuel line when testing :)

Sorry to be dumb but is the cold start held on with 2 allen key bolts? or have i gone to along?
