« on: 09 April 2010, 01:09 »

I am looking to tint my golf.

Has anyone done theirs and what are the minimum standards?

I am hoping to go for medium light smoke or just light smoke...not sure any suggestions..

thanks

I think the darkest you can legally go on the fronts is 35%. Any darker than that, you'll get plenty of unwanted attention from PC Plod.

Back windows can be as dark as you like.

I had a 35% front and 50/55% on the rear windows on a white Clio years back and it looked nice  Most [not all!] people tend to go darker on the back because they can but stick to the legal requirements for the front. It doesn't look as odd as some people might guess having two different films.

One other thing - don't try and do it yourself. You'll never get as good a finish compared to if you have it done professionally.

no it doesn't.  It looks poop when done badly.  Virtually every new car on the road and every car ever used in marketing has tinted windows so most must think it looks alright.

I think TASTEFUL tints on a lighter coloured car can look really smart.

Perhaps I should have been more specific, normal tints as in manufacturers tints look fine. Its the heavier tints as in what this thread is about that don't look so good.

I cant think of any benefits from tinting,

Get pulled more by the old bill when they are bored.
Harder to see at night so can be dangerous.
"Can" look absolute poo (when done badly/too dark).

Each to their own

no, the op said he was considering medium light or light smoke.  As long as the front windows aren't tinted why should he have any problems?

Standard front tint is as dark as allowed I believe.

I think to be honest I just don't see the point, they are tinted as standard and look nice. If you want to stand out go for a different mod.

I drove a car with tints at night once and hated it, its amazing how much you use the rear glass without realising it. When reversing out of a parking space or from a road for example.
