Towing a pair of cars on the road?
« on: 19 November 2004, 20:12 »
I'm the proud owner of two 1983 mk1 gti's that I have just won off the sometimes wonderful ebay.
just one question they are living in a field about 15mins down the A13.
I have a quote of ?100 to pick both of them up one at a time and deliver them to my new lock up but I was wondering what the laws state about towing a car on the road with nothing more than a quality Halfords tow rope?

anyone know the regulations that might save me ?50?

I'm pretty sure the car you're towing needs to be at least 3rd party insured,  which means -legally- you'd need to have a valid MOT certificate. It'd be sods law that a copper would be sitting there, see you towing a rusty old golf and do a spot check.
Makes sense really I suppose, even though the engine isn't running its just as likely to have an accident. Not what you wanted to hear I'm sure, but better to know now then get taken to court ;)

if the quote is only a ton, i'd pay it. cheap money for what would become a whole lot of trouble if you get stepped on by the fun police.

thanks for the info I suppose In better go for the legal if a little expensive way.
I always had the thought that I would be pulling off the road when the flash of blue lights made me have that sick feeling inside.
thanks again for the advice.

Either hire or Buy yourself a trailer.
Look in the free ad mags for a cheap car trailer, use it then sell it again. ;D

Save yourself a fortune or even keep it if you have the space :)
