Mobil 1 or Castrol Edge...?
« on: 05 April 2010, 12:39 »
Yearly service due quite soon (time and distance) and was wondering what the board opinion was on Mobil 1 versus Castrol Edge engine oil (both 5/30).

The point being my local Asda is selling Mobil at £32 for 5 litres and the best price I can find for Castrol is in Makro at £42 for 4 litres...the stealers want £12-odd per litre.  Obviously looking to supply my own oil when booking in for service.

Any thoughts/comments welcomed.

Thank you,
Billy

Castrol oil is made from a better quality base stock than Mobil.  There is only one type of Mobil oil which is suitable for the GTI and thats the ESP one, non of the other Mobil oils are approved by VW.

Mobil oils comply with the american API standards, whereas Castrol conforms to a european standard.  The euro standard is much more stringent and up to date.  For example a euro fully synth has to be just that.  But the american standard for fully synth still allows for some mineral oil in there.

In short, if you have the choice go for the Castrol.  Or Fuchs.

Don't get me wrong, the mobil ESP stuff will do you no harm whatsoever but the castrol stuff will be better

Thanks for that.

I assume in your last sentence you meant to say "will do you NO harm whatsoever"

Did you get your girlfriend's Polo oil change done okay at National...happy with the quality of service from them...?

I'd read the opposite. Mobil is better.

I've read that dealers have started using quantum long life oil. Apparently it is made by castrol, is Vw approved and is around £35 for 5 litres

Re the oil change, actually no, stag do was this weekend and so I'm now just about able to move

Yes it should be 'no harm'.  Dangerous typo that ...

As said Quantum is rebranded castrol so good as well.
