1st gear problems!!
« on: 18 November 2004, 17:34 »
Hello again!!

I've got a 91 mk1 cabby gti and when i select the reverse gear and reverse round a corner when i try to select 1st gear to set off it goes into 3rd. When i try to select first i just will not go in so i end up setting off in 2nd. After a very short while (like pulling up a traffic lights) i can select 1st gear with no probs! Any ideas?

sounds like the same prob i had on my scirocco (same linkage set up etc), lift up the leather/pvc gear stick surround, look down and youll see a metal plate around the base of the gearstick, there should be 2 10mm headed bolts one at the front and one at the back, loosen these off, move the plate and gear stick (will move with plate) over to the left as far as you can then tighten it up, then try your gears and all should be returned ok!

Gaz ;D

guys there are usually 2 balls at either end of the linkage.

These 2 bushes usually tend to "disappear" after a certain amount of time, lift up the gear cover and you should see a white one around the bottom of the gear selector rod, and then look in the engine bay where you can see the rods again, there should be another golf ball sized one on the other end of the same rod, if either one is missing it would explain the difficulty of getting it into first.

I had the same problem on my mk2.

I may be covering the same ground but could it be whole linkage kit needs doing/selector rods etc.

If you look in Haynes manual should give you all the tips on setting up/adjusting to sort any sort of problem like this
