ignition lock problems
« on: 18 November 2004, 14:16 »
My ignition is getting harder and harder the key just will not operate the lock it isnt a worn key as the spare is new and that is even worse!
i am tempted to just fill it with wd40 before anything else

has anyone had any problems before with a worn lock?

on the off chance does anyone no if it is the same as the lock in mk2 as i have one off my old 16v

I would suggest getting a new ingition barrel mate, mine was playing up a few months back on it decided to turn the started on while i was driving on a motorway, got loudish exhaust so never heard it and it stripped the gear on the starter motor.

well when i put the key in it wont turn so it could be classed as steering lock , the only reason i put this in the forum is because a friend of mine said golfs suffer with crap ignition locks and i havent heard of any problems, iknow the ignition swithces are bad news as i have done two on my previous golf

I have the same problem on my j plate mk2 from time to time.
Sometimes the key simply wont turn the lock (regardless of whether the steering lock is on or not) one night it took about 5minutes of trying to switch it on which was a bit stressful.
It's been ok for a few weeks now but you never know when it will happen again.
One question I have is can you buy a new ignition barrel for your existing key or do you have to go for a new lock & key package.

You got any pics of your dad's split ?

you can buy a new ignition lock barrel but i dont think they are easy to fit a scrappy might better and get the whole lot

however regarding mine i squirted about a quarter of a can of wd40 down the lockand kept working it in by turning the key and i think i have sorted it

my problem though was exactly the same as you described it just wouldnt turn and yes quite stressfull
