My first car was a fiat Pnda and also my second. I came to change me car and looking around I found a MK2 Driver 3dr in black. I liked it so I bought it. I had the car for 5 yrs with no problems untill it reached 160k and tthen the gearbox gave up. Replaced this only to have it written offf by a bus a week later:-(
I went out and bought a replacement MK3 Driver 5dr which wasnt as good and the head gasket went with only 79k showing, had this repaired and about 6 months later lost it on oil and water on Huntingdon ring rd (made the front page of the local paper).

Well no question went out and bought a GTi 8v but this nearly killed my love of golfs. It cost me in the 12 months of ownership nearly ?2500 in parts.

However I got rid of it and purchased a MK3 GTi  which wasnt as quick but certainly more refined.

I now have a garden and garage full of projects including a MK2 campaign 8v which when its finnished will be my daily driver as it is having the engine totally rebuilt, and the full braking system. The interior is mint and totally unmolested. Then its bye bye slow mk3 and hello fun fun fun on back rds, although I will miss abs

Started with veedubs 20 years ago  :o with 1200 cc Beetles and a 1303S (which I still have). Corrado owner now but still have very fond memories of an E reg mk2 8v and would have another one at the drop of a hat. :)

I remember when the GTi/XR3/GTE's were launched, totally new family hatchbacks that would blow the doors of any supposedly quick car of the late seventies/early eighties.

I suppose the attraction of VW's are their honesty, just quality engineering rather than relying on gimmick's although it seems as though the latest mk5's have had to be fitted with a fair share to keep up with everthing else.

I must admit to being a particular fan of the mk2 which in my eyes is a classic shape (not to say that the mk1 isn't) which became diluted with the mk3. I like the mk4 but not sure about the mk5 yet, some days I like it other days I don't ::)
