Fuel economy!!
« on: 15 November 2004, 19:43 »
Hello,

i've got a 91 mk1 cabby gti and i'm wondering what kind of mpg i should be getting because at the moment i estimate im gettin a pretty sh!t 18mpg. As my trip computer stopped working sometime ago this is an estimate. I do a bit of city centre driving but the majority of my driving is a-road/motorway. I dont really thrash the car and generally drive quite steady.

Cheers

18mpg is not what i would expect out of your mk1!

I would expect aroung 30-35mph from your car

Unless it was being thrashed all the time

I reckon I get between 31 - 33 on average for mine and that's going by the mfa, 18mpg is really bad. I can get upto 40 odd on a sensible motor way journey running at around 70mph. It could be a number of things, maybe you have a petrol leak, timing could be out, blocked injector maybe  :-\. Probably best to get it checked out by a garage or have a look at all the fuel bits if you can do jobs yourself. Out of interest, how are you working out your mpg ?
......now officially dubless.

I'm doing the mpg via filling the tank up to the brim. running it for a week and toping it back up to the brim. I then work out how many gallons i've used and divide the mileage done by the gallons used = mpg!

Cheers for the help guys!!
