Now the world or should I say my employer is going green, they are introducing HMRC average fuel rates which means 14p per mile on petrol right now (costs about 18p to run my current car right now at 32mpg). I have been a loyal supporter of Shell Optimax accross the last four years in my A3 2L Tfsi (mk5 gti engine), in the belief I will 1. go quicker and 2. it keeps the head and fuel system clean avoiding potential engine trouble. I have found this to be true but wonder if running the weaker 95ron would have been okay anyway. The VW/Audi car dealers normally fill their own cars with Super, surely that says something.

So my questions are:

1. Will standard unleaded be okay most of the time instead of super - about 6p difference per litre?
2. What MPG can I expect from the MK6 (looking to purchase soon)?
3. Is the fuel consumption really better in the MK6 - 888 engine compared to 113?

I get about 32mpg from my A3 but I drive it like its stolen about 70% of the time.

I know the other option is diesel but 'BORRING?' and the rate is 11p, still not great.

Cheers

If its a company car i really don't know why your bothering.
The mk5 was designed for 98 like it says in the fuel filler lid. The mk6 EA888 lists as 95.

The company will only pay me 14ppm back, so if it cost 18ppm and I do say 25K a year, thats £1,000 year additional cost to me in fuel. Have got used to the sweet 2litre engine, diesels do not cut it with their tractor sound and no revs where the fun begin ion petrol. Some changes in fuel and driving style during work time would narrow the gap. The other option is a big powerful diesel, get the same rate for diesels over 2litre (14ppm). The HMRC rate for petrol is based on 36mpg.

Just picked up my nice (not so shiney but wet) gti. In the book it states that there's no MPG or output enhancements from using higher grade fuel than the standard 95.

Personally, I used 95 for the first month or so. Changed to 99 and noticed quite a difference so I'm sticking with 99.

Whether the extra mpg/bhp are worth the extra cost is a matter of opinion.
Mk7 GTI. DBP, DCC, Winter pack. Mine since new, July 2013.
GTI no. 4. Golf no. 5.  VW no. 7.

Getting lousy fuel consumption.
Using high octane petrol. 75 miles of town driving so far with a full fat diet of traffic jams.
Trip computer registering average 13.9 mpg! Not happy.
Mileage so far: 315 miles.
