Mk2 GTi wouldn't wake up from repairs
« on: 28 March 2010, 08:54 »
Hi All, I'm in need of some advice to cure my beloved Mk2 Gti. Recently, my car seized while driving and just wouldn't restart nor rev. Had the car towed to my mechanic who pointed out the fuel pump being the culprit as it doesn't prime on switching the ignition. Wihout hesitation, I had the pumps (both) changed.

Yet, it refuses to start. Had the fueling checked and it was fine. The ignition is fine. There were occasions where it started and seemed to misfire and subsequently die off. Really have no idea what could be wrong as it was running fine all these while. The injectors, plugs, dizzy head and arm, fuel distributors are new and the metering head has been checked. The headgasket is rather new as it was overhauled sometime last year.

Any thoughts on this will be greatly appreciated.

Is it 8 or 16v?

There are no air leaks are there? I had problems starting one i had, i could get it to start if i gave it some revs and held them up but it misfired badly and as soon as i let off the throttle it cut out.

Turned out there was a big split in the inlet pipe elbow, replaced that and it was better but then realised when i tried to plug in one of the other pipes that goes into the intake piping near to the airbox it had folded under on one side and was causing the same problem.

I am confused, how can the fuel pump cause the engine to seize, if the pump is not priming then it could have been a faulty relay and not the pump itself.

Hi
Read 'cease' for seize.

Fuel pump relay?
I assume you have spark?
also if an 8v digi check the ecu a corroded earth strap to the gearbox is a common one. Number of Mk2 gti's we used to buy as none starters tuned out to be either that or applying jump leads incorrectly, It blows the ecu straightaway

I'm curious now, how would you apply jump leads incorrrectly?

Thanks guys for the advice. Will try them all out and report back when (eventually and hopefully) the car gets sorted out. My ride is an 8v converted to 9a block running on K-jet. I can't even rev it up when it starts and it plummets every time. The car has been running ace all the while since I had her refurbished back in 2008. Guess, she just wants everything new mechanically to accompany the recent new engine mounts and port + polished head.

re jump leads if positive is connected to negative and neg is connected to positive then it will blow the ecu. I know it sounds daft but you will be amazed at how many times it happens
