little stones in brakes...?
« on: 27 March 2010, 22:22 »
Was driving up a forest track this afternoon to get to the car park to go for a walk.  There was a lot of loose little stones and got this kinda hollow metally noise as if my exhaust pipe was hanging off or trailing on the ground, but wasn't.

Rattly noise continued for about a mile after re-joining proper tarmac road, then stopped.  Pretty sure it was a brake issue.

Anyone else experienced similar problem.  Is it major or just something I have to live with when driving a little bit offroad.

Any helpful comments greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Billy

Yep had this a couple of times before. Terrible racket! There was a thread a while back on this but there's not a lot you can do. I carry a longish screwdriver in the boot to push the guard back slightly, this usually frees any trapped stone.

Let the fun begin........Red Gti, full colour coding, DSG, Xenons, Winter pack, Lux pack, Highline, Sat Nav, Sunroof, Leather, Milltek, ABT rear valance, Goodyear F1 Asymmetrics....pescaras :-)

Happened to me when I'd only had the car a couple of weeks. Got out of the car expecting to see the exhaust trailing behind me, judging by the noise it was making!

When I realised what it was, I popped the wheel off and pulled the guard slightly and a TINY stone fell out.

Hasn't happened since (2+ years).

i get it all the time from gravel on the road where i work. its sounds awful amd i worried what damage it was doing at first but when it happens i just pull over and give the brake sheild a knock. that usually loosens the small stones.

It was suggested to me today that by reversing a couple of car lengths usually frees any stones caught in the brakes.

We have had this with our Audi A3 so it must be related to all VAG cars with the same brakes. It's a pain but not much can be done about it...
