vacuum hose missing?

on the RHS of the inlet manifold on my digi 8v theres a small oval unit which connects somewhere round the back of the engine. the pipe goes down behind the brake master cylinder ( http://www.golfgti.talktalk.net/pics/Engine1.JPG its black connects to the opposite side of where the air goes in with a cream bit on it )

Theres a small pin with a hole at the end with no tube on it but its sucking air in. I covered it with my finger and the idle speed drops v v slightly...

Terrible description I know but I hope you can help... is there something missing off it? what does this do and where does the other end of the tube go to?

I think you are talking about the brake boost valve. The brake servo is directly beneath the master cylinder which is where that hose plugs into.

Yes it should be plugged. Do you find braking is abit of an effort?

I find the brakes dont function as well... the pedal has a bit of travel before functioning then when it functions it does slightly until i push the pedal much further down...

There is a big hose appx 5mil diameter that travels round (as in the pic) behind the master cylinder but the valve as you mention it has another hole in it round the back of it (Not visible in the pic...

This has to splines but mine has one with no hose on at the back... Its got the main hose that travels behind the block along the bulk head and down behind the master cylinder, but what does the extra spline do?

PS I know this is not a mk2 Brake booster valve but its the closest golf valve for illustration purposes..

on a igi 8v, 1 of those nipples is for the mpg gauge on the dash mfa, the other hose and the larger one are blocked

So should I block that extra one up then? I've had a look and there's nothing that should be connected...?

if you dont have anything to plug in, then block em off. otherwise you have a vac leak
