MK2 Gti 16v Engine cut out?

Hi all,

Driving the car last night, nothing hard just around town and it cut out when I was nearly home.

The car just droped revs and nearly instantly shut off just leaving the ignition lights on and no warning lights.

The car was not over heating, dead on half way on the gauge.

Drove fine, the odd hot smell but think this is just older car smell that you get

No leaks under the bonnet?

I tried starting the car straight away and it just turned over but wouldnt fire...

After two or three mins of it sitting there, it started fine like it would normaly?

Started fine this morning and ticked over just right.

Any ideas?

I know it could be a million things but thought there might be some known issues that cause this?

ive had similar issues when the over-run cutoff valve was bust or when the pipes to it had come off. its the black plastic valve behind the airbox, check the pipes to it are plugged in ok, if that looks ok try disconnecting the electrical plug to it and see if that helps.

is that what stops revs dropping when you back off throttle??

mines started dropping back too far and occaisionally stalls.

I must admit, I have had to do up what I think is something to do with the air filter etc in the engine bay on the left hand side, black plastic funnel kind of thing that has two screw up clips? does that make sense?

just been and had a look at the air box. The vacuum pipe that connected to the over run valve  had come off.

I've refitted it and checked the others around that area.

Hopefully that will be it.

I had this prob but it was the ht leads breaking down inside.

there is a new dizzy left in the  boot so might be that, thought I had left the days of dizzys etc lol

I had a similar prob when starting from cold was having to continually rev it and keep revs highh when coming up to junctions as it'd stall.

Eventually after reading on here I checked the ISV ( Idle Stabilisation Valve) and then removed about, what looked like, 19yrs of gunky crud out of it refitted and jobs a good 'un.

Lol,  my 16v was running beautifully until I decided to give the ISV a bit of a spring cleaning.  Took it off, cleaned it out (wasn't bad at all actually), put it back on and now my car will not idle when cold!  I have to rev it constantly to spot it stalling...

Don't you just love old cars with all of their idosyncasies!
