Remove the black plastic water cover off the scuttle area (carefully, if original it will be brittle although new ones from vw about ?9) and you will see a white plastic 'basket' over the heater/fan unit. I think there's a couple of bolts burried down in there somewhere - easy in theory but tight for access. I've got to do mine once I have a replacement!

Before trying this, check your fuse, heater switch itself and on the heater fan there is a resistor with 3 (?) wire from it. These are often at fault, not the motor. Replacement is available from VW at ?24.29 +VAT, see below;

Hope this helps!

Hi mate.

I thought that mine had packed up also the other day. I removed the white plastic cover from the motor and checked it out. Good idea to do this even if it is the fuse because the motor collects a few leaves in there.Worth giving a spray of the old WD40 as well give it a good clean up.

In the end mine was a corroded fuse i removed it and replaced it although i have now got a loose connection in the fuse box i have sorted the problem out.

Hope you sort it.
Andy

Cheers paddy - got my eye on em!

Yup, it will come out through the engine bay - saves removing the dash, just a tight bloody fit!!

On subject of leaves collecting in the scuttle, good to keep em clean and check your rubber drain tubes at each end of scuttle. If you forget and they block, you will quickly get the scuttle overflowing with water, which drains into your heater fan - poss buggering this up? - but filling your footwells with water - i talk from experience! >:( ;D

We had discussion on this before DJ over at the Campaign Register (Now MK1 owners club!) Seemed to be difference of opinion as some reckon from memory that the face/side vents on the MK1 only every push out cold air but I can get hot from mine.

Not sure what the correct operation should be but possible that a pipe has come loose to the vent if only cold air?

If you are talking about the same vents I can confirm that the two at each side that face the driver and passenger will only ever let in fresh air so you will never ever get warm air coming through them (apart from in the summer  :smiley:) I know this for a fact as I was sad enough to read the owners manual from cover to cover when I first bought it  :laugh: but it is a '91 mk1 cab so the earlier tintops could be different :laugh:
......now officially dubless.
